VITAMIN C-learskin
Imagine demanding glowing skin without giving your body the raw materials it needs. It’s like wanting a house renovation without buying any building supplies — how is anything meant to repair?
It’s the same thing with vitamin C. People invest in expensive serums and supplements, but completely ignore the fact that vitamin C is a nutrient your body uses constantly for immunity, collagen, antioxidant defence, wound healing, and gut support. If your internal levels are low, your skin simply cannot do its job, it won’t matter how much vitamin C you’re putting on your face. Another thing to keep in mind is timing - skin health doesn’t happen overnight, it can take up to 3 months of consistency before you notice any changes.
Your gut health and skin health are directly connected. Around 70% of your immune system sits in your gut — and that immune system influences inflammation, breakouts, healing speed, and how well your skin barrier functions. If your diet is lacking in vitamin C-rich plant foods, chances are you’re also lacking in fibre, polyphenols, and prebiotic compounds.
So before you blame your skincare routine, ask yourself:
Are you giving your gut and skin the nutrition they require to function?
How to Actually Get Enough Vitamin C for Clearer Skin
You don’t need megadose supplements but you do need consistency. Here’s some foods that are easy to slot in to your daily routine:
Kiwi
Oranges and citrus
Strawberries
Capsicum
Broccoli
Kakadu plum (the GOAT of vitamin C)
Most adults only need around 45 mg/day, but your skin often performs best when you go above the bare minimum — naturally, through food.
This doesn’t mean you should stop using vitamin C on the outside of your body, it’s just a reminder that you also need to work on the inside.
